Are you struggling with unexplained symptoms like:
With just a simple blood test, we can now screen for up to 295 allergens at once — including food, pollen, dust mites, animal dander, insect venoms, and more — using cutting-edge nanotechnology.
An allergy is when your immune system overreacts to harmless substances, like foods, pollen, or pet fur or hair. In this process, your body misidentifies these harmless substances as harmful and attempts to fight them off, which causes symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and hives. In some cases, these symptoms may develop into more severe tissues like swelling or difficulty in breathing.
You should mainly avoid the substances that trigger your allergies, such as pollen, dust, or pet hair. Reduce dust and mould in the home by vacuuming regularly and using air purifiers. It is also recommended to use allergy shots (immunotherapy), which help the body build tolerance for what it is allergic to over time. Allergy medications like antihistamines or nasal sprays can provide short-term relief from symptoms.Additionally, blood tests help identify which exact allergens you are sensitive to, which helps guide more precise treatment options.
The most common symptoms of allergies are sneezing, runny or stuffy noses, itchy or watery eyes, coughing, wheezing, skin rashes or hives, and swelling, which may present around the eyes or lips. Also note that the degree of these symptoms may differ based on the allergen and how your body responds.
Allergies are generally not good due to the discomfort they cause, and in some cases, they can lead to serious reactions. Allergies are not themselves life-threatening, but they can contribute significantly to a large-scale reduction in quality of life.
Allergy is not considered a disease but rather a condition that is characterized by the immune system’s overreaction to typically harmless substances. It is not contagious and does not spread to others but does produce long-term symptoms and discomfort, which, in turn, affect daily life.
Your skin is the primary area which the immune system attacks as it is the first line of defense against foreign elements like food, medications, or environments which gain entry via touch. This refers to either the air we breathe or the substances we consume through food. This may bring on symptoms of itchy skin, redness, hives, or swelling.
An allergy blood test measures the concentration of specific IgE antibodies in your blood that target specific allergens. The substances you are allergic to trigger your immune system to produce these antibodies in response to what is actually a non-threat, such as pollen or certain foods. The test is a tool to identify what you are allergic to in the presence of these antibodies.
Vitamin C has a role in reducing allergy symptoms by acting as a natural antihistamine, which may help decrease issues like sneezing, a runny nose, or itching. Also, it plays a role in stabilising mast cells, which do release histamine during an allergic reaction. Although vitamin C is a support to the immune system, it is important to note that it should not replace prescribed allergy medications, which are required in more serious cases.
Milk can be an allergen for some, especially in infants and young children. In terms of a milk allergy, the immune system responds to milk proteins such as casein and whey as if they were harmful, which triggers an allergic reaction. Symptoms may range from mild (hives, stomach issues) to severe (difficulty breathing, anaphylaxis).
Allergies can occur at any time in a person’s life, but they mostly appear in childhood. Some people develop allergies in infancy, while others do so much later. Environmental factors, family history, and allergen exposure all influence the onset of allergies. However, it is also possible for adults to develop new allergies they did not have before.
The most common methods include the following:
To determine allergies, doctors use various methods, including reviewing medical history, conducting skin tests, performing blood tests, and administering patch and oral food challenges to understand the cause of the allergy.
Common allergens that affect the majority of people include pollen (for hay fever), dust mites, pet dander, and certain foods such as peanuts, eggs, and milk. Food allergies are common in children, with the most common ones being peanut and shellfish allergies.
Medicines like antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal sprays may improve your sneezing, itchiness, and congestion symptoms. In more serious cases, we may use allergy shots (immunotherapy) that will help you build tolerance over time.
Start out by avoiding what you know to be allergic to as much as you can. During high pollen counts, stay inside and run an air purifier at home. It is also recommended to wash your hands and face when you come from outside so that the pollen content is reduced. Regularly washing your hair and changing clothes when coming home helps reduce the exposure to allergens.
Currently, there is no complete cure for allergies. It can only be managed and symptoms can be reduced with help from medications like antihistamines, nasal sprays, and allergy shots (immunotherapy), which are great for controlling reactions and improving quality of life. Some people may outgrow certain allergies, but most must manage their symptoms long-term with lifestyle changes and treatments.
Allergy shots are very effective in the long term. They expose your immune system over time to small amounts of the allergen, which can desensitise it and reduce reactions. However, it’s important to note that permanent elimination cannot be possible for all cases of allergies.
Genetics is a significant factor; if your parents have allergies, you are at a higher risk of developing them. Also, we see that the environment plays a role, which may include exposure to pollutants and allergens that trigger allergies. Sometimes, repeated exposure to certain substances can lead to the body’s heightened sensitivity over time.
In most cases, allergies are mild; however, they can pose a significant risk if left untreated or in the event of severe reactions such as anaphylaxis, which is life-threatening. While allergies to pollen or dust are quite common and cause discomfort, food and insect allergies can cause severe symptoms. It is important to recognise the severity of your allergy so that you can take preventive steps accordingly.
