What is a Myomectomy?

A myomectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of uterine fibroids. It preserves the uterus in place, which is what many women want to avoid having it removed.

Fibroids are dense, noncancerous growths, round masses made up of muscle and fibrous tissue. They may range from the size of a seed to that of a melon. Although many fibroids go unnoticed, others may greatly affect a woman’s day-to-day life and reproductive health.

They may cause:

  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Frequent urination
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Difficulty conceiving or pregnancy complications

This Myomectomy treatment removes fibroids, thus improving symptoms while at the same time preserving your uterus.

Types of Myomectomy

The type of myomectomy you may require depends on several factors, including the size, number, and location of your fibroids, your overall health, and whether you plan to have children in the future.

  • Laparoscopic Myomectomy: This is best suited for those who have small to medium size fibroids. The procedure involves using a camera to view the cervix and making small incisions to remove the fibroids. It has better recovery results as well as less scarring.
  • Hysteroscopic Myomectomy: This is done in cases of submucosal fibroids, which are protruding into the uterine cavity,The surgeon uses a hysteroscope, which is an instrument that has a camera and light, and gently insert it through the vagina and cervix to remove the fibroids from the uterus.
  • Abdominal (Open) Myomectomy: This is the recommended procedure to remove large or deeply embedded fibroids. An incision is made on the skin, then the fibroids are removed by scraping them from the uterine wall. The incision site is then sewn back to seal the cut and allow healing.
  • Robotic Myomectomy: This minimally invasive surgery is typically the method of choice for clearing out fibroids, but the surgery can only be performed by a particularly experienced surgeon. “It’s done through tiny incisions that are only a few millimeters long and special robotic surgical tools that let you carefully and precisely take out the fibroids without cutting or damaging the rest of the uterus,”

How is The Myomectomy Procedure Performed?

  • General anaesthesia is given to ensure you remain asleep and pain-free throughout the procedure.
  • The type of myomectomy performed depends on several factors, such as the size, number, and location of the fibroids, as well as your overall condition. Your doctor will recommend the most suitable and effective approach for you.
  • During the surgery, the fibroids are carefully removed while preserving the healthy tissue of your uterus, helping to maintain its structure and function.
  • After the fibroids are removed, the uterus is sutured with care. Special attention is given to the incisions to support proper healing and protect your future.
  • You’ll be moved to recovery. And you will be monitored to see how the body responds. Depending on the type of myomectomy, you will either be good to go the same day if everything is fine, but for abdominal myomectomy, 1-2 days of hospitalization will be required.

FAQs

Yes, myomectomy is a very safe and standard treatment for fibroids when performed by the hands of an expert surgeon. As with any surgery, there are risks such as bleeding or infection that can occur; however, we do not consider these to be common issues.

Myomectomy is a common procedure we perform on women who have symptomatic uterine fibroids and want to keep their uterus. It’s also good for women who want to get pregnant later or don’t want a hysterectomy.

For open (abdominal) myomectomy, most patients stay in the hospital for 1 to 3 days. For minimally invasive options, which include laparoscopic or robotic myomectomy, you may go home the same day or spend just one night in the hospital.

Some light vaginal bleeding or spotting can be expected after the myomectomy. But if you have heavy bleeding, pass large clots, or have symptoms of infection (like fever or abnormal discharge that smells foul), it is important to contact your doctor immediately.

Myomectomy is not recommended if you have very large or many fibroids and are near to menopause, or do not plan to have more babies and prefer a total solution like a hysterectomy. Your doctor will determine the best option for you based on your health and your choices.
