Expert care for the invisible pain that ovarian cysts cause

Obstetrics & Gynecology >  Ovarian Cystectomy

A dull ache that doesn’t go away. Bloating makes everyday clothes feel uncomfortable. The menstrual cycle has been all over the place lately. Sound familiar? For many women, ovarian cysts don’t present with clear-cut symptoms. They grow slowly, which causes worry, stress, and questions that go unanswered.

If you have just found out you have a cyst in your ovary, you must know that they are more common than we think, and most of them can be treated with a procedure called ovarian cystectomy.

Ovarian Cystectomy

What Is Ovarian Cystectomy?

Ovarian cystectomy is a procedure that removes cysts from the affected ovaries while preserving them. It is a minimally invasive procedure recommended when cysts in the ovaries become large, painful, or recur frequently.

Unlike oophorectomy (which removes the entire ovary), a cystectomy is mainly focused on saving the ovary and preserving reproductive potential, making it very important for those who want to have children.

Types of Ovarian Cysts

  • Functional Cysts: These often form as a normal part of the menstrual cycle and usually go away on their own. However, if they become large or persistent, they may need to be removed.
  • Dermoid Cysts: These cysts can contain different types of tissue, such as hair or skin. They can grow large and may sometimes twist the ovary, causing  acute pain.
  • Endometriomas: Cysts caused by endometriosis that may interfere with reproductive health and the ability to conceive.
  • Cystadenomas: These are fluid-filled cysts that can grow quite large and usually require surgical removal
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): In many cases, removing the dominant cysts can help restore balance.

These cysts may affect the health of your ovaries. The ovarian cyst symptoms include bloating, pelvic pain and out-of-the-ordinary changes in the menstrual cycle. At times, they may also affect chances of pregnancy.

What is Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy?

The laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy is a minimally invasive surgery that is done to remove cysts from the ovary using an instrument called a laparoscope.

Here’s how the procedure is performed:

  • General anesthesia is provided, which helps avoid any pain and discomfort.
  • The ovarian cyst treatment starts with the surgeon making small slits or cuts in the lower abdomen.
  • The surgeon then uses the laparoscope (a thin tube with a light and camera) to get a better view of the ovaries so that they can carry out the procedure precisely.
  • Then they use small surgical tools to only remove the ovarian cysts while keeping healthy tissues intact.
  • The treated area is checked for bleeding, and the ovary is reconstructed as required.
  • Incisions are closed with dissolving sutures or skin glue.

In certain cases where the cyst is very large or concerning, an open cystectomy may be preferred, but the main aim of the procedure is to treat the cysts and preserve reproductive health.

Recovery After Ovarian Cystectomy

  • Most women can go home either the same night or after an overnight stay if there are no complications after an ovarian cyst removal surgery.
  • You may have mild cramping, shoulder pain (from the gas used in laparoscopy), or tiredness for a few days.
  • Normal activities can be resumed 1 to 2 weeks post-ovarian cyst operation.
  • Avoid strenuous activities or putting major stress on the body for at least 2 weeks.

Your doctor will further guide you on medications, wound care, and follow-up visits after the ovary cyst treatment.

FAQs

In most cases, ovarian cystectomy does not damage  the ability to get pregnant. Also, for women who are having issues with conceiving, related to the cysts, we may see an improvement in their chances of pregnancy. During the procedure, your doctor will take great care to preserve healthy ovarian tissue.

Ovarian cysts often form naturally as part of the menstrual cycle, especially during times of hormonal changes..However, they can also develop due to underlying conditions such as endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or from the growth of abnormal tissues like dermoid cysts or cystadenomas.

Once a cyst is removed, it will not return, but new ones may develop, especially while you are still menstruating. Your gynaecologist may recommend routine checkups for monitoring or may recommend hormone therapy to reduce the chance of recurrence.

Mild bloating, pelvic pain, or spotting for a few days are common symptoms that women report having after the ovarian cyst removal surgery. You may feel  tired and have less energy as your body heals. Severe side effects are less common, and the great majority of women get back to normal activities within 1 to 2 weeks post-laparoscopic surgery.

If there is a large cyst that is causing bloating or abdominal distension, it may cause a slimmer appearance after the surgery since the bloating goes away. But in general, removing a cyst does not lead to significant weight loss; instead, what may have been observed is a reduction in water retention or pressure, which could have influenced weight.
