Why should people get vaccinated against the Flu?

The seasonal influenza (flu) vaccine protects you against common viruses that cause the flu. The flu vaccine is updated annually to include the main viruses causing the flu each year. Millions of people get the flu every year and every flu season is different.  Thousands of people are hospitalized and many people die due to complications from flu-related conditions every year. The best way to prevent this is to get an annual vaccination. Vaccinations reduce the risk of flu illness and hospitalizations.

What is the Flu (Influenza) vaccine?

Influenza (flu) is caused by influenza viruses that affect the respiratory system, mainly the nose and throat and symptoms can vary from mild to severe symptoms. The Flu shot is an inactivated vaccine that is usually given in the arm. The seasonal flu vaccine protects against influenza viruses that medical research indicates would be the most common during the upcoming season.

What are the most common symptoms?

High fever, body pains, extreme tiredness, and dry cough are the most common symptoms.

How do flu vaccines work?

About two weeks after vaccination, Flu vaccines cause antibodies to develop in the body and these antibodies provide protection against infection with the viruses that are used to make the vaccine.

Who Should Not Be Vaccinated?

The vaccine can be given to anyone starting from the age of 6 months. However, your physician or vaccination nurse will be recommending you the influenza vaccines based on the factors like your age group, health status (current and past), any allergies to influenza vaccines or to their components, and considering your higher risk to get influenza complications

Vaccination is particularly important for the following groups as they are at higher risk of getting influenza complications:

  • Hajj and Umrah pilgrims
  • All healthcare workers
  • Pregnant women
  • Smokers
  • All adults aged 65 years and older
  • People under 65 years of age with high-risk conditions such as:
  • Taking treatments that weaken their immune systems like radiation therapy and other treatment for cancer
  • Having a damaged spleen or removed spleen
  • HIV infection or AIDS
