What is depression?

It is a condition where one feels low most of the day with or without fatigue and lack of interest for a minimum of two or more weeks.

To diagnose depression, however, one needs to satisfy the below criteria as per ICD 11 – One of the below significant symptoms (2 weeks or more) –

  • Low mood or persistent sadness
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Loss of interest or pleasure

Three or more of the below minor symptoms (2 weeks or more) –

  • Lack of focus / concentration
  • Feelings of helplessness
  • Disturbed sleep/appetite
  • Ideas of suicide – not feeling like living anymore
  • Feelings of worthlessness – low self-esteem/confidence
  • Feelings of guilt or self-blame

What are the different types of depression?
The depressive episode could be mild/moderate/severe (with or without psychotic symptoms), depending on the symptoms patient is experiencing. It could be a single episode or recurrent.
